Goodnotes is the leading AI digital paper used by millions of users worldwide. Launched in 2011, Goodnotes started as an improvement to physical paper notes — introducing the ability to take handwritten digital notes, search handwritten text, and organize everything into a digital library. Today, Goodnotes is pioneering generative AI for digital handwriting in the productivity space.
At Goodnotes, I've contributed to the development of a research publication stemming from an in-depth research project examining the impact of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in educational settings. The primary objective of this research endeavour was to delve into the technological advancements brought forth by GenAI and their potential implications for daily school life.

In April 2023, Goodnotes embarked on a research project to explore the implications of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in schools. Our goal was to understand the profound technological shift that GenAI will bring to every aspect of life, learning, and work. Through interviews and discussions with various stakeholders, we aimed to capture a holistic view of GenAI's role in education. Our report stands out as it features contributions, reflections, and ideas from a truly wide range of over 50 contributors, each offering a unique perspective on the challenges, trends, barriers, and solutions related to GenAI in school communities around the world. Goodnotes set out to explore and understand the social and emotional impact this technology already has on young people in school. They wanted to learn and consequently share more about changes to school policies and attitudes concerning the use of AI tools as well as the evolution of the technology itself. It became quite clear that one of the most under-investigated areas surrounding the subject was the impact certain tools were having on the social and emotional development of young learners.
This research publication provides recommendations while highlighting our findings from in-depth literature reviews, interviews, and focus groups with educators and learners across the world. The paper offers new insights and recommendations concerning the profound impact of GenAI on students’ well-being, social interactions, and emotional development while considering ways that existing concerns may be addressed.
